-Nurapni Binti Juraini-

Helping our OKU friends

Finally our two days program has ended. It is the time for helping our OKU friends in any possible such as reader session. The first thing that I did was bringing Fairus to library to return the borrowed books and also to find new reference books for his assignments. I told Fairus to sit at the couch and wait as I go find the books for him since he already gave me the books' title. After that we went back home. Days after that, I helped to read out the books we had borrowed from that day. As I read the words out loud, Fairus hands were typing each and every words on his laptop with speed and precision. I don't know much about the program used but apparently, his laptop is able to read out the words once it is typed in. It lasted quite a few hours if my memories serve me correctly. Then one day (on Sunday), Aishah another OKU friend needed help to bring her to Bank Islam in UM. I volunteered myself and brought her to Bank Islam. I asked her why she want to o there and she said she wants to withdraw money to buy novel. When we were there, fortunately there was a nice man (employee) who willingly extend his help to Aishah. Then, the whole withdrawal process was guided by the man. After that, we went back to KK.

All in all, as I bring my OKU friends to far away places, people are so nice to give way to us. Those who brought cars will slow down and stop for us and those who are strolling will intentionally go to my side way. It shows that our society is very caring to our OKU friends. Furthermore, I understand travelling to places all by themselves can be very dangerous especially crossing the road. When I asked them how they did it, they told me that they listen to the noise from the cars. To conclude, our OKU friends are really independent and brave just to get to other places.

From: Soong Woei Meng

My first reader session

It was on 10th of May, 2pm at Bilik Seri Jati.... At first, I was a bit nervous because I never actually helped an OKU before but I have to say this first experience went absolutely fine! The first OKU friend that I helped was Aisyah. For my first the reader session, I helped Kak Aisyah read the notes from the slides on her computer while she typed back using her brailler (more like a braille version of typewriter) .

She was very nice and I talked to her a bit so we don't feel awkward much with each other. The first thing I noticed was what she took out from her bag, which was a huge pile of notes, neatly arranged by chapters that she had already typed in braille. I was so surprised because that was really quite a lot, and yeah, obviously she had to typed it all to read it for the quizzes and exams. So I asked Kak Aisyah if there was any machines instead of typing the notes all by herself because I feel like it could've tire her out for typing the notes into braille. She told me there was, known as braille embosser but it was very expensive and the machine was usually used for publishing books in braille. She doesn't really mind though for typing all the notes, I assumed maybe because she was used to it.

So we did the reader session and it took patience to wait for her to type and feel the notes to check the spelling throughout the session. But I don't really mind, plus I was also amazed of how fast she type the notes into braille. The session went on for 3 hours nonstop that I felt tired while reading the notes for her. I still continued reading but Kak Aisyah might have noticed my tiredness by the raspiness of my voice so she called it a day. It was a great experience doing the reading sessions with her and hopefully I can do better to help more OKU friends in the future... =)

Preparing the final report, presentation, and survey

Social Engagement to be end soon.....

From being choose as a leader until now, almost three month of preparation, one month of the project carry out, learned a lot from all of you, OKU friends and my teammates. Not only teamwork but also the way we interact and doing this project together.

This not a service but a voluntary work we done for OKU friends. We know there are someone in the society like our friends, who need help and care, but we don't have the time and opportunity to do for them. This is a really great course to let us have an opportunity to give back some things to the society, let them feel warm from the society, we really care about you, and we know you are there and i am here for you.

Almost the end...

To be continue...

:)

"The only disability in life is a bad atitude."

All the best guys!

-Ummu Jannah Muhammad

Kejayaan.

Mereka.. Sama seperti kita.

-Ummu Jannah Muhammad

Hari Kedua Bersama Rakan OKU.

Ahad, 9 Mei 2015.

Mereka..
Sama seperti kita.

-Ummu Jannah Muhammad
For the 6th and last post here, I would like to share about the last task given to me. One of our OKU friend, Yusri requested help from me to find a book named "Asas-asas Antropologi" from the library. The book was needed as a guidance for his assignment. Without hesitation, I accepted his request and I managed to borrow it from the library. Here is the picture of the book.

Next, we discussed about which sub-topic to choose as there are 10 altogether. He chose the third sub-topic ( shortest length of contents compared to others ) for me to typed it out in Microsoft Word and then email it to him. It consist of 19 pages altogether to be typed and I must say it was a challenge for me at first but at the end, I realized that it wasn't only tested my patience but also tested my personal skills. I was glad that I learnt to be more understanding and able to do good deeds by helping him for his assignment. It was not an easy task for him as well because he still needs to summarize what I've done for his presentation slide purpose.

I was thinking that if he managed to go through difficulties just to complete his task with open-minded, so why can't we ? We have always been complaining about too much task given and lack of time is given to submit the task but then what about them, the disabled ones ? It somehow change my mindset in looking things at positive sides and to never complaint on little things in life. I really hope that we will still keep in touch with them even though we have completed our credit hours for this course. This social engagement project has benefited me and I believed, inspires us to be a better person in life. Do always appreciate the people around us, to be grateful and thankful for what we have in life especially to our parents and also, to not take things for granted.

A Day To Remember

Yesterday, I did a survey about the feedback of our social engagement project from the OKUs.

Through this meaningful task, I get a little closer to them because before this, I seldom pass by block D in kk7 even though I just live under the same building with them. Yet, this time I entered their room one by one. They welcomed me friendly and invited me to have a seat.

From Aisyah and Hue, they hope that our interaction with the OKU do not just end right after our social engagement project ends. I totally agree with this. Actually this project is a beginning for us to get to know our new oku friends, it is not a "subject" that want us to cut off our "duty hour", after finish the hours then we do not help them anymore. While from JiaHui, she said she hopes that we do not treat oku as a weird people and avoid them, we can actually be close them with them. :)

Terima kasih.

Reading session!!!

Okay 1st time pergi library API peh!!!! nak masuk kene touch kad matrik wooo! Aku menawarkan diri untuk menolong Jia Hui pergi API nak pinjam buku. Teguh  Jia tau! semangat die nk buat assignment. Wah! terkejut aku siap tahu dosa tinggalkan lagi. Alhamdulillah Reading session banyak membantu disamping mentarbiyahkan aku.

Jia Hui kini MC, mudah2an beliau cepat sembuh, bolehlah study amin....

End-less.

All good things must come to an end
but the next experience awaits.

The end of the Social Engagement programme
doesn't mean that our relationship has come to an end

We are always there to offer our help when you need us
Give us a call
text us too
As long as we are still keeping in touch
A hand of help
Why not?

Last but not least
It's truly a blessing to know our special friends
Who teach us
To love
To laugh
To live
Like there's no tomorrow

Just live our lives to the fullest.
=)

Hui En.

Words of encouragement

"Sometimes the things we can't change end up changing us."
A quote that special dedicated to our special friends.

Keep on growing
And one day
You will be truly surprised that
You are much more stronger than you think.

We fall
We cry
but we have learnt
To stand up

Endure the painfulness
And tell ourselves
Scars testify our transformation to a grown-up.

Cheers.
=)

Hui En

Unique

Because of their disability
they have discovered their abilities that far beyond their imagination.

When one of our special friends requested me to go to her room
I was shocked to be invited into a dark room
Only after a moment
I realized whether with the light on or off
it meant no difference to her

She was still able to get her things done perfectly
without any help
I was truly amazed

And I think
They are unique.

Each of everyone of us do not need to be like others
Just be the one who we are.
That's it.
=)

Hui En

I have ended my final reader session which marks the very end of our project.
I am truly blessed to be in Group 1 as it has given me the opportunity to interact and know my fellow special friends from my residential college(7th residential college).

Through out this journey and especially through the reader session I have realised how grateful I should be as I am phsically  . I realised that our special friends have to face a whole lot of difficulties especially in their studies .

A part from that, I asked my friends if they were satisfied with our reader session and I had the same feedback from each and everyone of them. They told me that this session was indeed very helpful as previously it was really hard for them to look for readers and they are glad enough to have us as their readers even upon completing our project.

To sum up, I would like to express my gratitude to our lecturers for giving us the chance to pursue this social engagement course .

Last grammar session.

27-5-2015

Today was my final reading session with Yusri . The session was from 8-10pm in Bilik Seri Jati. Today I continued reading chapter 3 which was on punctuation for yusri. After completing the whole chapter, we then ran through the model exercises as we did in the previous session. We also revised the previous chapter together as I re-read the chapter. After completing that, I helped Yusri to look for information on Google on the net. We also had a small discussion on Google's softwares which failed. The session ended at 10pm.

Reading Session with Fairus

21-5-2015

Today I has a session with Fairus in Bilik Seri Jati from 9-11pm . Fairus needed some help to search for information regarding the Indian History which is mainly foccussed on the Mauryan Empire. I helped Fairus to look for the main aspects that enhanced the gloryness of the empire in terms of economic , potenntial and social aspect. I then extracted all the details and compiled it for Fairus. I was happy to help Fairus as we had some brainstorming session and Fairus was happy enough to share it with me.

Rakan kita hebat!

Nak berjaya, kita kena cekal. Pasti berjaya. Jangan pada kekurangan semata-mata. Tapi lihatlah ke hadapan bagaimana ingin mencapainya.

Kenangan terindah

9th of may activities

From: Soong Woei Meng

That day was our second day of the program. We had our fun and bonding ewith our OKU friends. On 9th May, the activity Family Day which was an SOKUZA Club activity and we offer to help and organised it. So on that day, everyone came on time, had their breakfast and then straight to UM varsity lake. When we reached there, small droplets of water were falling from the sky and we were afraid that it might rain. So, with some consideration, we decided to switched out venue to Gazebo which luckily, happened to be vacant. When moving there, we some difficulties due to there was no path for the wheelchairs. Thus, we have to carried the person and the wheelchair separately to another side which the wheelchair proved to be too heavy to carry. Nevertheless, we successfully brought everyone to Gazebo and the activities shortly began. We began with an activity call "Kotak teka-teki" which the people have to guessed what was inside (tofu, jelly, biscuit, rope and cloth). Then, we also have a word puzzle in the words of braille for people to guess and then, drawing with your eyes folded. The drawing activity was interesting as non-eye OKU people have to fold their eyes and OKU friends alike and drew pictures of human and some lake. The pictures they drew were funny.  Later on, we also had an activity "kotak beracun". It is an box contained some punishment that who get the box after a music stop to play, he or she had to follow the punishment. Then, we brought the our OKU friends to a rabbit exhibition show which incidentally happened to be just around the corner. All os us had fun touching the rabbits. After, all of us went back to have lunch and listen to another talk by another speaker invited by En. Firdaus.

Overall, what I had learned from that day event was that planning an event was not easy. There were some activities that ended too early. So on the spot, my friends and I had to think sometime to stall the time and not making too boring as well. So, we did add on some challenges during the drawing activity and bring them to the rabbit exhibition in hope of lengthening  the time. Which in the end, everything end a little late of schedule but, we managed to finish everything. Another lesson I had learned was that our OKU friends really friendly. They were very cooperative and commit in the activities. Which I think not many "normal people" can do but our OKU friends can. So, I felt that our OKU friends were no different from me. I even respect their dedication and friendliness toward us. Thank you.

Mesin Breiller?????

WE ARE GREAT

Life is a journey
For everyone to go through
No matter how hard it is
No matter how easy it is
You can not say no
You can not even say quit

You may fall at the beginning
You may not even fall at all
But you need to believe
Journey is not easy
You can not choose by your own
You can not forget and leave it

BUT
You need to know
Journey has its own end
Either you want to be happy or you want to be sad
You decide your way
And you just wait the result at the end

Through Social Engagement Project,
through SOKUZA,
I've learnt a lot of things.
Learnt about what perspective we should have toward OKU.
Learnt about never to give up.
Learnt about accepting our self as we are and accepting others as they are.
Learnt to help.
I've gain so much experience from them.

A little help could make the world smile.

Hari Pertama

Hari pertama aku ditugaskan bahagian teknikal.

Everything has to come to an end

It's so sad that this social engagement will come to and end.  It still freshen right in my mind when at first, all I ever think was this project encourage students to be more helpful but it somehow it also consider as wasting time. I mean like, if I want to help the unfortunate, I can just go and give them a help instead of joining a group and help them in the crowd. It definitely wrong. Being in a group make me appreciate teamwork more.

By the way, the last 3 hours I've spent it by doing a reader session with Anis. She handed me a task in which I need find all the quotes by the famous author  such as Aristotle, and few more. Im so glad to be able to help her since she's a very easygoing person and friendly. I wish I can help her more in the future. And not too forget, Anis also said she's doing part time at Dialogue in the Dark at Jaya One. I've been longing to pay that place a visit but will do it soon or later. The way she telling us is very interesting and therefore there are so much things to be learnt.

Life is about how strong you are.
It is about how many strength you have.
If you're having a difficult time, never give up, stay strong, that is what you live for,
to fight, to enjoy the process of living.
Having a bad day does not mean you have a bad life.
So, stay strong and keep fighting!

New Perspective Towards OKU

New Perspective Towards OKU

If someone asked me about OKU before joing the social engagement activities, "projek kita serupa"
I have a negative opinion toward them.
I think that OKU are very depends on other people.
For instance,
they cannot step up the ladder by themselves,
they cannot read well,
they need another person to read for them,
they need other to guide them all the time.

However,
after joining this meaningful event,
my perspective towards OKU are totally changed.
The first impression towards them is
They are the toughest
They are the most lovely
They are my  best motivators
They changed my view toward my life
Now, i think that helping OKU are our human responsibility.  We are much luckier than them.

THANK YOU, MY DEAR FRIENDS. HOPE ONE DAY WE CAN HAVE FUN TOGETHER AGAIN.

Reader Session

In this project, we are given a task which is helping our OKU friends for reading session.(・∀・)
I was assigned to help Jia Hui to check her work due to the scanner could not function perfectly and hence it created typos.
While I was checking work for Jia Hui, I felt sympathy for her, at the same time I'm amused of her strength because we are incapable to do things out of our sight. (╯︵╰,)
I've completed the task within 2 days. Although it was quite difficult because there were nearly millions of words I can say, we need to check every single word, yet, it was really a great help for the OKUs.(´∀`)♡

Set your sights high, the higher the better. Expect the most wonderful things to happen, not in the future but right now. Realize that nothing is too good. Allow absolutely nothing to hamper you or hold you up in any way.

Done 6 hours

Finally, i've completed my 6 hours became a reader for the OKUs.

It was a new experience for me because it was the first time i work with the OKUs. They were so nice and always happy go lucky.

Eventhough SE already finish, i'm looking forward to become a volunteer reader for them. Thanks to this course, it really develops my personality and teach me how to interact with the others.

Thanks for the sweet memories.

Reader session with Yusri

On the 18th of May, I had a 2 and a half hour reader session with our friend Yusri in Bilik Sri Jati. Before beginning with our session I had a half an hour chat with Yusri. He explained how hard it is to scan the words published in books if the font size isn't 12.  After hearing Yusri's explanation I realised how hard it is for them to interpret and transfer information from reading materials.

I must say that I had a great time helping Yusri out.Yusri needed some help with grammar and so we had a mini tutor session. We covered two chapters on verbs and upon completing reading the notes for him , we then practised the exercises provided. Yusri was amazing as he completed the exercises really fast and I was amazed that he could remember every single word that i taught and explained to him. At the end of the day, I was very happy as I could help Yusri out. Although we are practising the reader session to fulfill our hours, I would be happy enough to continue my reader session after this and I believe that my group mates feel the same too.

Reader Session with Fairus

Had a reader session with fairus together with husni. We both scanned the details of the essays that fairus wanted to have and Husni read the correct sentences and I'll edit the mistype words or the words that have been mixed.

I can see how hard is it for them to  analyse everything and I can see how they really struggles for their studies. I shouldnt give an excuse to my studies because if they can, why wont I? :)

A little job done for OKU. Don't know whether it is appreciate by others or not but it is sincerely from me, it done but not for grade, just want to help.

Social Engagement not only a project, but a way to you to communicate with the society whose need cares and helps. A good project compare to the boring assignments and tests. It is practical and memorable as a good experience.

A little Message

So since our social engagement project is coming to an end, here is a little message to our special OKU friends.

" You are not obligated to do everything a healthy person does. You are not obligated to be an inspiration. You are not obligated to hide your illness in order to make other people comfortable. You are allowed to know your limits. You are allowed to have bad days. You are allowed to stay in bed if you can't get up to do anything but go to the bathroom. It is not your fault if other people leave you because of your illness. It is not your fault that you are sick. You don't have to apologize for something that is out of your control and all of this is because all of you are amazing in my eyes. Remember the minute you think of giving up, think of the reason why you held on for so long ".

A FAMOUS DISABLED PERSON

Nicholas James "Nick" Vujicic was born on 4 December 1982 and he is an Australian Christian evangelist and motivational speaker born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. As a child, he struggled mentally and emotionally as well as physically, but eventually came to terms with his disability and, at the age of seventeen, started his own non-profit organisation, Life Without Limbs. Vujicic presents motivational speeches worldwide which focus on life with a disability, hope and finding meaning in life. He also speaks about his belief that God can use any willing heart to do his work and that God is big enough to overcome any disability.

During secondary school, Vujicic was elected captain of Runcorn State High School in Queensland and worked with the student council on fundraising events for local charities and disability campaigns. When he was seventeen, he started to give talks at his prayer group and later founded his non-profit organisation, Life Without Limbs.

Vujicic has written that he keeps a pair of shoes in his closet due to his belief in miracles. In 1990 he won the Australian young citizen award for his bravery and perseverance. In 2005 Vujicic was nominated for the Young Australian of the Year Award.

Thus, no matter we face any problems in the future, just LET IT GO and it will be fine. =)
